The Convention and Visitors Bureau could not have said it any better when they described Missoula as the following:
"Nestled in the Rockies of Western Montana is one of America's most sophisticated small towns - Missoula. Within an area population of more than 70,000, Missoula has what you'd expect to find in a big city - a wide range of hotels, restaurants, shops and galleries, small museums, a ballet company, live theatre and a symphony. It's also home to the University of Montana, laid back stores.
Still what reigns queen in Missoula is Mother Nature. Missoula is surrounded by millions of acres of National Forest, wilderness and recreation areas. Within an hours drive, you can hike four different mountain ranges, bike hundreds of miles of trails, fish five major rivers, and ski any of for resorts (not to mention dozens of cross country ski trails).
This combination of city cool and wilderness splendor makes a trip to Missoula a one-of-a-kind vacation."

After growing up in the beach town of La Jolla, CA and living in great
places such as Sun Valley, Palo Alto, Seattle, Aspen and Millbrook, NY,
I could not ask for a more wonderful place to live than Missoula. I can
walk out my door and hike to the top of Mount Jumbo or Mount Sentinel
in the morning and go to the symphony at night. Missoula offers as much
culture as any big city. And you don't have to fight traffic to enjoy
an evening out.
